TIMARU MARKET.
(STECIAL TO "THI PBBS3. h ) T3MABU, April 30. The local markets for wheat and bate are at present lifeless. MiDors still hold such large stocks that they are not bothering even to look at samples, and speculators are only operating very cautiously. Holders are for the most part disinclined to sell their grain at less than the values which were ruling a month ago, and these are not now obtainable. The result is that practically no sales are.being effected just
no-tv. Nominally Velvet is worth 6s Bd, and, Red Chaff *6s 7d on trucks, while the top price for Tuscan is Gs 6d, Tiraaru. Fowl wheat is selling at2oe to 25g per sack. It is very scarce. ■ Hardly any locally grown oats are j offering, but Southland oate are nowoffering at 3s Bd, on tracks, for seed lines,.and 3s 6d to 3g 8d for feed. Very little oatsheaf chaff is on offer. It is worth £5 to £5 10s per ton on trucks. Farmers are not cutting their oat crops into chaff this year, except where' the crops are very light. A very largo quantity of baled straw and straw chaff is heing sent to Australia, and good prices are being given for straw stacks, even in remote country districts, where they are ordinarily unsaleable. Oaten straw is worth Is 3d to Ik 4d ncr sack and wheat straw 9d to 10d. " ' The potato market ie slightly easier than it was, duo to the fact that digging is in full swing. The tubers were n/yrcr lifted in better condition than this yoar, and thero was never a »eapoii when there were fewer 6mall ones. Comparatively few aro soiling here, the markets at present being supplied chiefly from Southland. To-day's quotation is £4 us f.o.b.
