In future tho New Zealand Government will have some voice in ths allocation of shipping space for meat on Home-going steamers. This is tho effect of a statement on tho subject made by the Prime Minister to-day. "It has been arranged;", said. Mr Massey, "that the High Coromiseiouer shall be a lnembsr of .what is known as the Tonnage Committee of .the Board of Trade in London, to look after 'New - Zealand interests in the matter of shipping and insulated space. The Board of Trado has also consented to v representative of tho Now Zealand Government acting on-the Shipping Committee in New Zealand. Mr J. B. Triggs, Assistant Public 'Service Commissioner, who lias assisted mc in connexion with the export of frozen nisat to .the Imperial Government, will be the! New Zealand Government's representative on the Shipping Committee. "It should be much more satisfactory to have the New Zealand Government directly represented on both bodies;" said Mr Massey. "It is hoped that by this' means friction, will be avoided, and mor c satisfaction given to the interests of producer and those immediately concerned in the shipment of produce from the Dominion." A. good deal of anxiety wag felt by the dairy farmers of Taranaki over the congested, state of the stores and the difficulties being encountered in getting a cheeso shipment away, in" the South Taranaki district alone i 4,000 crates are in store,, representing a value of fully £90,000. and it is expected that G7OO crates will be forwarded in May. According to,the Prime Minister cheeso is likely to bo clear in June. This information has afforded great satisfaction, and Mr C. A. Wilkinson. M.P. for Egmont. who has been constantly in communication with Mr Massey about the matter, has telegraphed to the Prime Minister as follows: —"Your telegram regarding cheese will give great satisfaction to dairy producers in tho Taranaki province." 1 am satisfied that the farmers generally appreciate your prompt action regarding shipping matters during the war period." Tt is understood that arrangements are beinc made to form a deputation, representing the meat producers of Canterbury. to wait upon tho Prime Minister in Wellington in order to discuss the seriousness of the situation as far as Canterbury farmers are concerned. The date when the deputation will tvait on Mr Massey has not yet been fixed.
