NEWS AND NOTES.

NEW ZEALAND BUTTXB

A FLATTENING TESTIMONIAL

Messrs A. Hat rick and Co. Wauganui,' have received the following lottcr~ from the principal of a firm in Glasgow which has a large export business: —"Dear Sirs, —"When in Argyllshire last week, where I have a small dairy for the supply, of niy own house, I was.much struck with the quality of the butter on the table, and s& it was so superior to what we had been getting, I asked was it our own. or which of tho farmers it was bought from. I was, to my surprise, told that our own dairy was not making any butter just now. and this was New Zealand butter. I said it the best butter I had ever tasted, and that for the future ofily this New Zealand butter was to be used upstairs.. "I looked up the wholesale prices, and found that it is priced the same as Danish butter, which is a very good criterion and high standard. Our homo butter-makers make the butter so hard that it-will hardly spread, and it has a peculiar taste. Yours is so very good that I am writing to you and come other firms with whom we deal in New Zealand, to congratulate you on the excellent quality. There is a great future for your butter if you will only keep the 'quality up. I am going to give ifc a boom in the papore in a few days, and am going to write my experience, in order to warm up our homo farmers to improve their make, ?e some of it is abominably bad. "I do not know from what part of Now. Zealand the butter comes, or whether your district produces butter or not. but I thought that in a distant part of the Empire you would like to know how much your butter is appreciated hero, and I am quite sure that, coining from your country, it will have a big sale, and take hold of the market in preference to Danish and other butters which come from countries which at the present moment, I am sorry to say, are trading largely with the enemy, and have their leanings towards the enemy. From this point alone, New Zealand butter, coming from a part of our Empire, is worthy of support, quite apart from the most excellent quality. I think it is really the beet butter I have ever tasted." HAWAEDEN A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. A meotiiig of the committee of the Hawarden A. and J. Association was held yesterday afternoon, Mr H. M. Anderson presiding. The interim bal-ance-sheet of the recent Show was presented by the treasurer, showing receipts £-&33 16s Id,- expenditure £438 10s 3d, credit balance £2o os 9d which was considered highly satisfactory, owing to the fact that a lose of £17 was sustained by the Association on the special train which was run from Christchurch. Accounts amounting to £361 17s 6d were passed for payment. The tender of W. Shilton, Rangiora, for the Bupply of four silver challenge cups, was accepted.
