MR MASSEY CABLES TO BOARD OP TRADE.
SOUTHLAND'S SPACE. fPRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, April 26. The Prime Minister stated this afternoon that in order to see if something could be done to relievo the position of tho Canterbury meat producers through the shortage of shipping space, he had cabled to the Board of Trade, London, asking that body if it could secure any ships with insulated epa.ee to send them out immediately in ballast. This, of course, would niean a lapse of at least six weeks before the vessels would be available hero. Mr Massey thought it possible in the circumstances that the Southland producers might forego some of their space allotment in order to help the Canterbury men out of their plight. Hp telegraphed to the Southland meat producers accordingly, but it i s understood that the latter's reply was not favourable—they could not see their way at present to accede to the request. * ■
