■ ♦ ■' A. E. STODDART. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, April 5. A. E. Stoddart, the famous cricketer, committed suicide by shooting himself. At the inquest the widow gave evidence that her husband had resigned tho secretaryship of the Queen's Club owing U, a nervous breakdown. He had been without work since, and was very depressed. Ho had lost his money through the war. Late on Saturday night he took a pistol from his -pocket and said he was "going to finish it." Mrs Stoddart advised him to consult his friends, and, after a slight struggle sho secured the pistol, but returned it as it was not loaded, and took away tho Ixix of cartridges. Later she found him dead in bed. and then (discovered that he had another box of cartridges.A verdict of suicide was returned. (Received April Bth, 12.45 a.m.) LONDON, Aoril 6. Andrew Ernest Stoddart, born March llth, 1863. was one of the most famous of British athletes. He captained two British cricket teams to Australia, and "Stoddart's team" of Rugby players to ! New Zealand and Australia practically ; besan New Zealand football as we now j know it. Ho captained England in both cricket and football.
