RIFLE SHOOTING.

—-> —; SOUTH ISLAND MEETING.

D. ROOTS WINS CHAMPIONSHIP.

The weather was again bright and fine for tlie • concluding day's ehooting of tho Canterbury Military District Riflo Association's annual prize-firing mooting. Tbo sua 'was very -.trong, and there was a light, tricky breeze blowing, up tho* rang*, which upset tho calculations ol £oine of tho mark--raeh. .- Match N0...3 of the B Series (champ-on- ' ship ehooting) was won by Rifleman: P. Morgan (Christchurch' K.C.) with a ecoro of 40. Tho later marksmen found tbo conditions rather di_iculi; with .tho wind inclined to change suddenly. v Match So. i (GOOy-is) was won by tho youthful maxksman Sergeant G. M Evans (Waitaki 8.H.5.), with a score of 41. Rifle*_a_ -D. Boots (Patea E.C.) being second with 46. Thero tras somo very good shooting in Match No. 5 (700 yds). Lieutenant A; K. Anderson (Waitaki 8.H.5.) and Rifleman D. Boots (Patea 8.C.) both registered a possible, and tied' for first place. , • Tho consistently good shooting of D. Rooto • aver the longer ranges gavo him a lead of three points in the .leading forty aggregate scores which qualified for the championship final. Ho easily held tho lead, and won tho belt with nino jroint3 to spare. J. Brydon (Kaiapoi 8.C.) registered tho .highest score in the final ehoot with 4S. Tho meeting throughout was very successful, and the competitors highly appreciated tho Association's generosity in extending the prize list in most of the, matches. Tho visiting marksmen wero very gratified with their -success; and the fact that the arrangements worked without the eliehtest hitch was due chiefly to the work of the secretary, Lieutenant i. Tilnbrell, and hia staff. At tho conclusion of tho eliooting, the Hon. O. Louisson presented the prizes. .Tho Mayor (Mr 11. Holland) was an interested • spectator during tho closing stages.
