AUSTRIAN'S DEFEATED IN BESSARABIA.
THE ENEMY REINFORCED
BERNE, March 31. Since March 24tb 170 train-loads of -Saxon troops aud Bavarians have proceeded to the Carpathians. (Received April 3rd, 12.25 a.m.) PETROGRAD, April 2. An official statement says:—"An'important success was gained in tho Krasna region, west of Simno. Tho enemy is rapidly retreating, and we are vigorously pressing tho pursuit. "AA'e secured very substantial results in the Carpathians. AVading through tnow.np to the loins, climbing almost 7>erpendicnlar precipices, and hacking through entanglements in the forests, our troops dislodged Austrian? from trenches in the Litowiska region, and captured a series of fortified height's on "the principal chain of the Bet-kid Mountains. "AYe surrounded and partially exterminated several Austrian battalions, towards Cholin, north-east of Czernowitz. Wo captured 1500 survivors. Altogether we captured 5080 men, and fourteen machine-guns, in the Carpathians on Tuesday."
The High Commissioner reports:—; IrONDON, April Ist (3.45 a.m.). Petrograd reports progress in the environs of Krasnoople. On Tuesday,, the Germans wore forced to fall back j hurriedly, leaving 200 prisoners. In th© j Carpathians the Russian offensive con- ] tinnes. Eighteen hundred prisoners j wore captured on Aiondny.
