GRAIN FROM RUSSIA.
SUPPLY "WAITING AT ARCHANGEL.
(Received March 26th, 7.23 p.m.) COPENHAGEN. March 26. Fifty thousand tons of grain are ready at Archangel for shipment to Britain and France.
Archangel, the most northerly port ih Russia, is situated at tho head of tho delta of tho Dwina, in latitude 64 dog. 32mm north. It lies at the- head of the Gulf of Archangel, a large arm of the White Sea, and is 120 miles from the Arctic Circle. Archangel communicates with tho interior of Russia by river and canal, and by a railway 522 miles to Yaroslavl, and thonco to Moscow and Southern Russia. The harbour is about a milo bolow the city, and is ordinarily accessible from May to October. Shortly after the war started two powerful ice-breaking vessels were sent to Archangel from Canada, and it is probable that by their use a navigable channel may be opened by the end of this month or early in April. The closing of the Dardanelles shut up a large, proportion of last season's wheat harvest in Southern Russia, and it is probable that, pending the forcing of the Dardanelles and the. Bosphorus by the Allied Fleets; which will not be accomplished for some time yet, portion of the huge supplies of wheat may be exported from Archangel. Com para ti vol v little grain is grown in Northern Russia owing to the severity of tho climate. The shortest day at Archangel has only 3 hours 12 minutes, tho longest 21 hours 48 minutes of daylight.
