ENGINEERS' CONFERENCE AT DUNEDIN.

TO TH__ KDITOB OP ''THE PRESS-" Sir, —According to the report of the meeting of tho Sumner Borough Council, in your issue of the 3rd inst., "it was decided to send tho borough foreman to attend the conference of local engineers at Dunedin." Tho present town clerk of Sumner (Mr Middleton) was appointed to fill the dual offices of town clerk aud engineer to the Borough Council. The foreman (11 r Winter). I understand, was appointed a "working foreman." Then why send the latter to the conference? If Mr Middleton cannot go in his official capacity as the borough's engineer, it would be better that tho borough be not represented at ail. There arc lots of things in Sumner for the foreman to do. without taking a trip to Dunedin at the ratepayers' expense.— Yours, etc.. A SUMNER RATEPAYER. March sth.
