GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.

(BT OCR COMMERCIAIi KDITOU.)

Friday Evening. The Government's preliminary estimate of 25.96 bushels, as the wheat yield per acre for the current season's crop has given rise to considerablo adverse comment, as it has evidently been based upon information obtained before threshing had commenced. From the reports to hand of tho -way tho wheat crop in Canterbury is turning out tho yield for the province cannot be loss than 30 bu-hels per acre, and for the greater part of the area in wheat in other parts of the Dominion the crops, according to latest advices, should turn out almost equal to those iv Canterbury. Estimates made at this particular period, unless somewhere near the mark, are likely to tmduly affect the market, which has already reached an abnormally high level.

During the week a number of sales of wheat have taken, place as high as ~s per bushel at country stations for Tuscan as well as for Pearl, though it is now ssiid that this figure may only be given in exceptional cases. Somo growers who have been looking for 7s have only been able to obtain 6s lOd and 6s lid.

A good deal of difficulty appears to have arisen between the millers and the Government regarding the price of flour rnado from imported wheat, in cases where the latter has been mixed with locally-grown wheat, and the matter is not yet settled.

The price of flour has been raised locally to £17 10s per ton for sacks and to proportionally higher rates for s_.allcr bags. The oats market is keeping firm, and although there may be fewer buyers the prices are" rather better. "'A" grade Cartons aro eellins; at 3s lOd to 3s lid, and B grade 3s 3d to 3s 9d at country stations.

There is a good demand for barley at late rates, and there is no change in oatsheaf chaff, which is quoted at £5 5s to £5 10s at country stations. There is less enquiry for potatoes, as the North Island main crop*' is now coming on tho market, and Wellington and Auckland are being well supplied. The price is still £4 for delivery this month.
