A WOULD-BE SUICIDE.

WANGANUI, January 11. While taking soundings at the harbour mouth on Saturday, the pilot (Captain Mclntyre), ana 3lr J. A. Sutherland, foreman of works, were surprised to see :i .young man, -whom they had noticed on the seaward end of the south mole, suddenly throw himself into tho water. They were near the point, and as the man rose to the surface they threw a rope to him which he easily took hold of, and was safely drawn towards tho launch, thougn much exhausted. When interrogated he said ho was oppressed by the fact or his being out of work, and in financial straits. He could boar it no longer, and having had no one in whom to confide his troubles, decided to seek death unless matters improved with him. On tho previous day he had contemplated throwing himself off the north mole, but the presence of people in tho locality deterred him. and when he did make' his attempt he was unaware that, there ware rescuers about, thouch subsequently he expressed his thankfulness for the rescue.
