"The -drawing of the Calcutta Sweep ! on the champion race took place last | night -it Birdsey's Hotel. Tho number j of" tickets tafceVi was 274, but a good ■ many wore rained for before the drawing commenced. " The whole of the stakes thus amounted to £548. As eoou , as tho drawing was over Mr liarnard j offered the chances oT tho eeveral j horses for sale by public auction. Tho j competition was spirited, and the sum . realised amounted to £689. Five per , cent, of this amount is taken for the i expenses of tho auction, reducing tho j total to £635. Of this, half is to b<- [ paid to tho drawers of 'the:eeveral i horses, leaving alwut £'317 to be added , to the stakes, which thus amount to > about £805. Four-fifths of this sum. or j about £692, will be the prize for the ; holder of the winning horse, anil one- ; fifth, or about £173, for the holder of I the second horse. It appears that the ; whole prize to be won. £&65. might j have been obtained for i'6S9 had it oc- ! eurrecl to any enterprising speculator | to buy up all tho field. Even allowing j for an advanced price which a further ; bidding might have occasioned, a fair J profit of about £100 might have been , realised by the transaction." \
