"Th© Times," in a leader, says the nation will only rise to the. full height of the emergency when it is told the dimensions of the problem, aud every man deeply impressed with the possible need of individual sacrifice. This will never be attained by vague statements that recruiting Ls going very well, or th© excuse that it is a military matter which cannot be discussed.
Lord Selborne, speaking in the House of Lords, said that the more the Government took the peoplo into their confidence th© more resolute they would be. All they wanted was tho whole truth, however unpleasant. LONDON, January 8. "The Times" in a leading article says:— "Lord Kitchener has called armies, as it were, out of th© ground. Our towns aro filling with the un- . wonted bustle of preparations for active service. Th© nation is deeply grateful to Lord Kitchener, and feels that ho Is solidly fulfilling the pledges he gay© when he entered tho Cabinet. At the same time, it would like to know a little more of what is being done."
