January 9. • Tne Kaiser telegraphed to the Pope denying that Cardinal Mercicr had been arrested, and stating that the Germans had merely warned him to discontinue anti-German propaganda, of which the Kair.er was sure the Pope would disapprove. LONDON. January 8. Mr T. P. O'Connor. ALP., describes the arrest of Cardinal Mcrcier as one of those clumsy and brutal acts of German policy which recoils on their own head. LONDON, January 9. Tho "Daily Chronicle's*' Milan correspondent says that tho Pope was personally acquainted with Cardinal
Mercier's pastoral prior to publication, and has since expressed unreserved approval of it.
AMSTERDAM, January 9
The newspaper "Tijd" says the contradiction of Cardinal Mcrcicr's arrest is untrue. The Cardinal has not been allowed to leave Malines. tscveral priests who were imprisoned, for a day or two aro. prepared to contradict the denial.
