Progress of the War.
Interest centres to-day in Lord Kitchener's statement in the House of Lords, the note of which is one of quiet confidence. The Allies, he says, are "daily " increasing their resources of men and " material, enabling them to prosecute " the war to a triumphant conclusion." As to the probable date of that conclusion, his Lordship was silent. The French, Lord Kitchener tells us, liai'o made ''noteworthy progress" eastward of liheims, as well as in Alsace, while German aspirations in Poland have received a '"'severe, check." On one point of particular interest, the cable message is annovintjly uncertain. A canvass of. householders showed that
"21,800"' men were willing to serve. Surely 0110 figure at least is missing from this total, and we hope, two. The news from the western theatre tells the usual story of small gains, and "The ' : Times" tells ue that in the aggregate these daily advances amount to an appreciable shifting of the line. The policy of the Allies there is evidently still to hold as many Germans a.s .possible to tho long line, while Russia increases her pressure, but there seems to be a lull in tho East. Apart from a lively affair near the East Prussian frontier, and a continuation of tho advance in the Bukovina, at the eastern end of Russia's long European front, Petrograd reports nothing of note. The Russians, however, seem to have defeated the Turks completely in the Caucasus. If tho details of the affair are correct, Enver Pafilia blundered badly, for he advanced into Russian territory without adequate artillery and transport, a mistake that a German commander would not have made. By this time Field-Marshal Yon dor Goltz "has probably said some, very unpleaeant tilings to his pupil. When the news of this defeat leaks out in Constantinople. German dominance in Turkey will bo in etill greater danger of being overthrown.
