POWER SPRAYING.

A demonstration of a power spraying pump for orchard ists was given at Mr A. Lane's orchard, Harewood road, Papanui, on Tuesday, under the supervision of -Mr W. J. Courtier, Government expert. The small oil engine is a portable, machine, very simple in construction and working* and easily moved on a small carriage wherever required, a Myers spray pump and barrel for the spraying mixture being attached. The plant stands but a few feet high, and is a very reliable outfit for all small and medium-sized orchards, bigger plants being available for larger orchards. The equipment includes two lines of spray hose, but in the larger plants provision is made for more. The agents for the power spray, the International Harvester Co., Ltd., gave the demonstration with a mixture .of of lime sulphur, l_lb arsenate of lead, and 50 gallons of water, forming an insecticide and fungicide combined. This spray controls both eating and sucking insects, such as pear slug, codlin moth, red mite or spider, powdery mildew, and black spot and scab. "The main object of the demonstration was to illustrate the effectiveness of a uniform pressure a t the nozzles, and the great saving in time, labour, and expense.. The engine easily maintained a pressure of 1501b, and did the work most effectively. The outfit is largely used in the Otago, Nelson, and Hawke's Bay fruitgrowing districts, and is being adopted ■by local orchardists, who speak highly of its suitability for the work. 2
