Thera were 164 insolvencies in victoria in 1014, representing liabilities £111.289, assets £63,147, dehciencies £54,285. surpluses £61,436. The liilf-vearlv South Australian State revenue was £1,769,839, adocrease of £394,148, compared with .the corresponding period of 1913. The half-yearly W r est Australian revenue was -t,2,2<33,227, an increase of £96,423 compared with last year. Tho expenditure was £2,715,190. The "Daily Telegraph's" Pefcin correspondent states that Yuan-Shih-Kai has carried legislation securing for himself the Chinese.Presidency for life and also the right to nominate his successor. , At the Hford (Essex),railway station an. express train ran through a local train at the* crossing points and turned over on to an embankment. A number of carriages were smashed. Ten persons were killed, and many others were seriously wounded. George Roy, a labourer, has identified the body of the woman known as Lucy Gorman. Her correct name, was Lucy Carlson. She was living apart from her husband for tourteen years, during which time sho lived with Roy, until a fortnight ago, when she left with another man in a "taxi." A parade of' unemployed in New York demanding work, resulted in a riot. The police clubbed scores of men, and there were many arrests. The unemployed attempted rescues, but the police charged the crowd and beat off the demonstrators, whose banners wero inscribed: "All homeless men revolt; to hell with charity." A double tragedy has taken place at Toolera (Victoria), Miss-Tvynne, aged seventeen, was shot by an Italian who was camping near her home. Two sisters were standing outside the house, when the Italian approached, seized a gun, and pointed it at tho younger sister, who fled and escaped unhnrt. The man then turned the gun on tho elder girl, and blew off the top of her head. Having done this, he shot himself dead. The United States Congress is discussing an Immigration Hill with a literary test designed largely to exclude undesirable immigrants. Senator Red proposed the exclusion of all immigrants except Caucasians. Great, opposition to this proposal immediately developed, and the amendment was finally defeated by an overwhelming majority. A proposal for the exclusion of Turks and East Indians was also defeated. Africans were excluded by a small majority.
