This serious troublo had its start when somebody set on foot a foolish report, which nobody took the troublo to verify, that a young bugler had been kicked to death by come of tho Chinese in Little Bourko-street. Some three Irundred soldiers went into Little Bourke street to "get even" 7 with the slandered Chinese. Windows were smashed, and there was wild talk of running all the Chinese out of the street at the pom* of the bayonet. Volleys of bricks or stones were directed at the houses and shops of tho Chinese. Thousands of others got around and amongst ihe soldiers and helped to work m> furious excitement. The police made pretty free use of iheir batons in trying to restore order and in beating off attacker? who would ,iot allow arrests to be made. It took some desperate struggling to make even six j arrests. Soldiers figured with civilians | in further disorderliness in the Melbourne streets on Monday night, but it was on a comparatively mild scale.
