INQUESTS ON THE VICTIMS.

WAR BROUGHT HOME TO ENGLAND.

LONDON, December IS. Tlio raid has had the effect of materially increasing tho flow of men to enlist, particularly in-the area affected by Wednesday's bombardment. At the inquest on the Scarborough, victims, Dean, a coastguard pettyoffieer, gavo evidence that there wer© two largo cruisers, accompanied by two smaller cruisers. Tho larger vessels fired their starboard guns, and then turned and fired their port batteries. Tho bombardment lasted forty minutes, in which five hundred shells were thrown. At the Hartlepool inquest on seventyseven victims of the German raid, the Coroner said:—"This has brought the war homo to us, and nov,* -\vo have conic idea of what the Belgians and the French suffered and are still suffering. It is gratifying to know that tho people on tho East Coast oro not living in fear of tho enemy." Ono witness gave evidence that a. shell \ buret in a breakfast-room, where a number of people were seated, and killed his daughter. In a-nother instance a shell passed right through the I body of » -woman, and in another case a grandfather found two of his grandchildren dead under his wrecked house. Their father was absent on duty as a stoker in tho Navy. Tho jury returned a vordict that under cover of a dense fog, tho German ihips fm?d shells at tbe twin ports of Hartlepool, thereby killing unarmed civilians. Tho jurymen handed ! their foes to the victims' fund. ! The Coroner, at an inquest at "Whitbr on two victims, said:—This enqury is unprecedented both in your experience and mine. These- days of excitement call for steadfast courage on tho part of those who caunot servo tho King by taking m> arms. We must do our best by going about with as little excitement and display of heroics as possible. An artillery officer gavo evidence that common shell, and not shrapnel, was used. Tho vordict returned by tho jury was that tho victims wero killed by German cruisors. LONDON, December 18. The- "Morning Post" declares that tho bombardment of undefended towns without notice is piracy, and those guilty of it should bo ireatod as pirates and enemies of the human race. There must, bo no moro maudlin sentiment about German naval officers and tbo German Navy, which have lost their honour and forfeited the claim to bo treated according to ;.he usance cf civilised warfare.
