FROM " THE PRESS" OF 1864.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3rd

'*Tho new mast for tho ship British Empiro, made hy Messrs Grubb and Allan, of Lyttelton, from timber obtained from Messrs Holmes and Hay's bush, was towed from tho yard to tho ship, and successfully raised and stepped yesterday. The mast is 89ft from tho heel to tho cap, and is tho largest that has yet been put into a vessel at Lyttelton. No little interest was felt in Port in the event, which was testified by tho firing of guns by tho shipping and other marks of rejoicing."
