JOTTINGS FOR FARJfEKS
Tho Tain of this week did an immense amount of cood in South Canterbury. It was the best rain of tho season so far, and lias saved the (situation.
I The last Dominion Conference of tho Farmers' Union passed a motion urgius that hooks should bo provided in tha roadside waggons, in order to facilitate tho conveyance of carcases of pigs by railways, "in reply to this representation, the Secretary for Agriculture (Mr F. S. Pope) has written as follows to the union:—"l havo +ho honour to inform you that tho chief objection to tho carrying out of your suggestion is that the carcases would require to bo suspended from the roofe of tho covered vans, and would be chafed considerably with tho motion of the train. In such a position the space occupied iv tho trucks would be excessive, and in many cases there would be no room for other goods. While desirous of meeting your wishes as far as nracticable, I regret that I cannot eeo my way to adopt your suggestion. It is considered, however, that carcases of pifSs, would bo carried under better conditions if the consignors v/ero to provide suitable coverings for them.' .
