PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.

ANNUAL REPORT,

Tho annual report of tho Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, to bo presented at tho general meeting of members tomorrow night, eta.tes that consideration was given to a proposal to send, a party to the Chatham Islands, to investigate the natural science of the islands, and ultimately to publish tho results of the investigations, but owing to tho. war the matter was hold in abeyance for the present. Tho Council took action to support tho endeavours of tho Manawatu Philosophical Society, to extend the boundaries of the Tongariro National Park to at least those suggested by Dr. L. Cockayne in his report to the Government on the subject. The Council actively supported the appeal of Sir Douglas Mawson to the New Zealand Government, for the sum of £500 to enable him to publish tho physical results of the expedition. Tho Council had expressed its appreciation of the action of the Deans family in handing over their bush to the public, and the recognition of the Institute in relation to the control of tho gift, which was of great historical and scientific interest to the community. The usual temperature observations at the Arthur's Pass tunnel works continued, and specimens of the rocks were received for examination, thus keeging the eeries complete.
