LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL.

» ANNUAL FLOW Kit- SHOW. Tho Lincoln District High School's fourth annual Flower Show was held yesterday, and proved To bo a great success. The attendance was good, and the results should be satisfactory. Mr George Rennie. chairman' of tho School Committee, in asking the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes to dcclaro the Showopen, said that not only was ho their member, but their good friend and neighbour, who had assisted them with exhibits. Hβ took the opportunity of congratulating Mr Rhodes on his position in tho Ministry. Mr Hhodes, who was received with applause, thanked Mr Ronnie for his kind congratulations, und said that it afforded him much |>leasure to bo present. Tho occasion was an agreeable break in his electioneering duties. The school and tho district were to be congratulated in having an annual Flower Show. It "was good for the district, and particularly for tho children, in whom it inculcated a love of flowers and a liking to grow vegetables. It also promoted an interest in domestic pursuits, as tho fine exhibit of cakes ami scones proved. There was evidence that the Show even encouraged men to make scones and such like edibles, but he had to admit that those exhibited by the ladies had his preference. No matter how small people's gardens were, they could, by careful cultivation, attain good results, but no one was ever satisfied. "Year after year they all strove for better results, and that was as it should be. Such shows stimulated competition, and competition produced good results. Notwithstanding frosts and tho drought, the exhibits "were excellent. Mr Nairn, "who acted as judge of the flowers, had informed him (Mr Rhodes) that he had, experienced the same difficulties in Christchurch ■ owing to frost and drought as they themselves had experienced, especially with roses. After again congratulating the school and tho district, Mr Rhodes formally declared tho Show open.
