O Colonels Halliwell and Anderson went North by the Monowai last night. The Hon. F. 11. D. Bell was among last night's departures for "Wellington. Mr Arthur Clifton ha.<* been elected chairman of ' the Westland County Council. The Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, went North by last night's ferr_- steamer. Colonel R. J. Collin*, C.M.G., Co.v trolicr and Auditor-General, arrive-:. frc.n the North last evening, and will leavo for the West Coast on. Saturday. Messrs L. Bennington and W. Barrett havo boon re-elected unopposed as members of the Pharmacy Board of Now Zealand. After an absence of ten months, Mr J. M. Mitchell returned to Christchurch yesterday from a tour of England aud Scotland. Ho left his two daughters at the Royal Academy of Music, in London, where they are continuing their studies. Mr James Mackenzie, permanent -head of the Department of Lands and Survey, is in Canterbury on departmental business. To-day and to-mor-row ho will be at Hanmer Spring.*, going through the State nurseries and plantations. Ho returns to Wellington by Saturday night's ferry steamer. Mr E. F. Shadbolfc, for eighteen months secretary of the District Council of the Social Democratic Party in Canterbury, is leaving Christchurch for the North Island, for the. purpose of taking up land. On Tuesday, iv tho Trades Hall, a number of his friends met to bid him adieu, and Mr H. Hunter, president of the Social Democratic Party, presented him with a travelling bag on behalf of tho party, in recognition of his service** to the Labour movement.
