METROPOLITAN MEETING.

DJEBBY DAY.

The Canterbury Jockey Clob continued

its Meeting under favourable conditions, though many found tho nor'-west weather somewhat oppressive. There

Iras again a very good , attendance, not, however, so largo as usual perhaps in tho outside enclosure. The racing wa3 excellent,- some of the finishes being particularly close, the public iv tho stands being in doubt until tho nam-

bers were hoisted. The course .vas fast and tlio nverago size of tho fields very good. The starting on the whole -rras very satisfactory, though an odd horse or two did not gefc away as well ns could have boon wished. Tho sum of £07,G92 10s was handled at the totalisators. as against £30,025 last year, the increase thus being £IC*37 10s. Tho Jlidcllcton Hurdlo Handicap drew together a half-dozen competitors, Corrio, Sunbeam and Glenorchy beicj* so evenly supported that they would all have paid about the same dividend, but this time Ngatiruanui was on his

best behaviour, and was the first over

iho initial hurdle, and. with Cantorbury and Sunbeam handy, raced out- of the straight. Sunbeam joined N'ratiruanui along the back, Corrie a long way in tho rear. Ngatiruanui led six furlongs from homo, and rati homo a good winner, but Come carried "her import well, and heading Sunbeam after jumping the last hnrdlo got. second place. The time was fast. field of seventeen lined up for tho Criterion Handicap, and it proved a cood betHn* race, Sauci, Chortle, Martius, Bertrada, First Glance, Postillion and Autumnus beinc; the most fancied in order. A splendid start was effected, Pavlova making tho paoo. with Downham, Chudic, Autummis and Shaki to tho straight, where Postillion wae racing on tho outside. Chortle and First Glance coming through from behind. A rattling good race ensued. Auturanus and ChortJo both heading Pavolva, the first-named winning handily by quite a length. Pavlova was more than that away, with Downhaiu, First Glance, and Sauci at shorter intervals. Tho time, lmin 20 4-oth sec, was fast. Autumnus. though he had boon lame off and on, put up a. really good performance, but the disappointing horse of the race was Postillion, who. apparently likes something easier, and fade-el right cut from below tho distance. Autumuus has better form to recommend him than Chortle, and is a,year older, and they were at tho same weights, but the last-named was carrying moro than twice the money tho Kitcartonian was entrusted with, as he has a largo following from the North. Autumnus is, probably never quite strung tin on account of his infirmities or might accomplish etill greater things. Sir T. H. Lowry's Desert Gold was made a littlo better favourite for the Irweli Handicap than Sir George Cliffords pair Holiday and Flying. Start, "Wishful carrying tho colours of Mr G. L. Stead, and a nice-looking colt bciup nest in request, Hyla, the Hon. J. D. Ormo'nd's representative, and Snub, one of Mr C. G. Dal£oty's, being nest-in. order of support. ?Jr A. W. Rutherford's Birkenhcad filly Saraisen an outsider, showed a lot of pace, and led well down tho straight, but Flying Start (full-brother to FirstFlight), and Desert. Gold, caught her in the last half furlong. Wishful finished well and got fourth. The iimo equalled tho Welcome Stakes go, and Desert Gold, though beaten, ran right up to her .performance in that event. Each of iiie horses whieli' composed tho nice field of half-a-dozen which came into" tho paddoch and birdcage for tho most valuab'.o .New Zealand Derby that - has ever been run/ was eagerly scanned. The pair that really looked tho best wc-ro Reputation and Balboa, but First Flight stripped well, Ruigforni and Camulus bofe n seasoned appearance,* and no fault could be found with tho condition of Roumania. The preliminaries in the straight over, each of the horsemen dismounted, and led his horso about until tho wofd was given to mount, and without much loss of time Mr Wood caught them as thoy lined at the tape at'tho very first attemot, with the result that they broKO away well in line. First Flight, Ringform, and Reputation was the order as they raced past Cutfcs's with a quarter of a mile gone, Camulus bringing up tho rear. This was tho order to tho end of the first half-mile, where Ringform headed First Flight, and. Reputation ranged alongside the last named. but the pair headed Ringform a little further .on, and the othorg came on, and at tho sis furlong post, and at the fi-ro furlong mark the six competitors were bunched together. A little later Reputation ehot out clear in front with a length and a half to spare. Entering the straight, Reputation was still leading and going well, • and First Flight, under pressure, went up and joined him, they ran together to a furlong and. a half from, home. At tho distasce Balboa was a couple of lengths behind. Thon First Flight appeared to go in on Reputation, who dropped back, and Balboa shot up on the outside, and took charge. First- Flight hanging on to tho rails. Reputation was pulled out, and finishing with a good run, "was fast closing up again, f.nd got to First Flight's throat latch as they crossed tho line, but could not reach Balboa s who was all out to win by a length and a half, Ringform two lengths away, followed by Camulus and Roumauia. The various stages of tho journey quarter 27sec, three furlongs- 41sec, half mile 55Jsec, five furlongs lmin Bjsec, six furlongs lmin 2VJsec, r.iile lmin -io 1 oth sco, full distanco 2min 35 2-och. sec. Reputation was an . odds on favourite, carrying more than half the investments. First Flight was next in favour, and theri camo Balboa at a good price for a third fancy. Ringform, Camulus, and Roumania followed in order iv the matter of investments. An enquiry was held by the stewards into the interference on , the part of First Flight, with Reputation, with the result that Reputation was placed second and First Flight third, in accordance with conrer vested in them under the Rules, this being the second occasion upon which the rule has been onforced since it was adopted over twelve months ago. Without in any way detracting from the merit of Balboa's win, we should not care to accept the result as conclusive of the superiority of the eon of Varco. Tho next meeting of the trio will be full of interest.

Tho Juvenile Plate had ten runners, seven throe-year-olds and three two-year-olds. Sweet Corn, who had run second in tho Gimcrack Stakes at R&nclwick, was made a little better favourite than Bimet<?r, the pair carrying half the money on the machine between them. Beo and Hvmettius were next in demand, Tete-a-tete being the fifth fancy. A good start was effected, though Hymettius lost ground by running right across tho back of the field. Approaching the home bend, Chofewana, Tete-a-tete, and Biraeter -were just clear of a -well-bunched field, and Teto-a-t«to showing most pace had a bit the best of the Malster colt, and won by about half a length, Bee, Chakwana, Dinner Gong, and Sweet Corn being tee next to finish, all well upThat they were going fast tho time---1.0 4-otns—-shpw-s. Mr Lowrv's luck was iff again, and it was that gentle- i mat's nrst p«rby that Balboa ivon, and i the Hawito s /Bay sportsman was congratulated oq his dual success. Teto-a-

Tc-fce is a commanding half-aister to Bobrikoff, and 13 being eerved by time, and may stay later on, as some of the Royal Fusiliers aro doing frith age. Then came the Metropolitan Handicap, and a good deal of interest was infused into the event through the presence of the North Island pair, Bonny Helen sad Sinapis, whoso fires appearance it was. The public made fconuy Helen favourite, Hyettus coining next in request, and then Sinapie, Cainpeador, and Quarantine. The etart somewhat spoiled through Rinaldo, Moutoa iGirl, and Maniaroa being hardly ready I when the lever was raised. Hyettus, Slcan, and >iysteriarch made the pace ancftho Hon. J. IX Onnond's gelding j shook ofi his attendants one after tho other as they came at him, and ho led to tho distance, where tho pace ho had set commenced to tell 011 him. and Bonny Helen.. Quarantine, and Sinapis put in their claims. Bonny Helen str:d- ---! W home a length clsar of Quarantine, ! who caught and beat Sinapis nearing ! tho post for ftecond money. Slogan, Moutoa Girl. Maniaroa, and the casingtip Hyettus were next. The t.:nie, 23S .i-Stbs, was a fifth of a second slower than the Derby. Bonny Helen has developed into a nice mare." Tho Epsom Handicap was responsible for a "field of thirteen. Winding Way be>"ng instaJlcd favourite. Fair Rosamond. Dirkfui. Hani an. Vocation, and Angelina being those on trusted with iT)f~ k money of tho others. Some of tho horses appeared to get caught in tho tape*. Jianiaji shot out smartly, and soon had a clear load a samo lengths, but Hoy. who had given a lot of trouble, put in a great daah or eoeed and soon joined bor relative, whol however, broke a blood-vessel; leaving Hoy in the lead. Mr Ormond'a filly turned into the ei-raight f;till clear of Cruidino; Way. who. half way down tho running, lot!, bat was challenged by Scotch Melody first and then by Golden King and Birkful, and the four ran locked together post the poet. Vocation a length behind them, followed by Hoy and Fair Rosamond. With little Ices of timo the- numbers went up. 7, 5, 11. and number 8 might well have been hoisted, too. The judge's verdict was "Half a head, half a head, and 'a head,"' a finish that some lessdL*criminating judge might have declared a dead-heat between four. The proceedings erf tho rlay closed with tho Ashley Handicap, for which there wcto n d«7.f»ri stP'-ters. F'ower of the West, Steinheil, Saniiei,' Kelaseo. and "Wharfinger wero each very solidly sunrcrted in a hoary bettinc race, considering the value of tho etake. nearly as much being invested ac on the chief race of tho day—tho Derby, which ca.-ried tho largest* sum invested during the day. A very fair start was effected. Shepherd's* Bush being slow" to leave, however. Ladrone and Samiel led into tho straight, but St. Elmn. Wharfinger, Silver Shield, and Birkbock came on tl>o .scene. swJ r -' ll i home in orrW, Flower of the West being fifth.
