THE SHIPPING COMPANIES' DEMANDS. FARMERS' UNION PROTEST. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, November 9. In view of tho expressed intention of tho shipping companies to demand payment of freight on exports at the port of shipment, and in view of the fact that a 25 per cent, surcharge on cargoes other than butter, cheese, and meat, to cover contingencies due to the war. has already been made, Mr J. G. Wilson, Dominion president of the New Zealand Farmers' L'djoii, has telegraphed to tho Prime Minister as follows:—"I desire to strongly protest on behalf of farmers against unreasonable attitude of shipping companies charging freight at port of shipment, in addition to 23 per cent, surchargo on cenoral cargo. Look to you on farmers' behalf to insist \ipon withdrawal from the position. It means large additional cost on all produce."
