Tlie Ashlcv County Council met at Loburn on Wednesday. Present—Messrs \V. Mackintosh (chairman). Croft, Elisor lliatt, O'llalloran. Parish, and I'hilpott. Government grant* on the ICstimates for bridge* over the Makenkeri, Okuku. and Glen tin were favourably received, and it was decided unanimously to move for a loan of L'JXO for the couiiiv's share of tho cost of rebuilding- the "Okuku bridge, while ordinary revenue, would meet the shares for the other bridges. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote, appointing the •i-lth inst. as tbo dale for the general election of Councillors, and it was decided to close nominations on the l"th inst. In reply to the Automobile Association, it, was decided to notify the state of roads as required. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote notifying the neiv gravel reserves on No. 2 road, and asking the Couiicil t"> fence it. Tho clerk was instructed to ascertain tho prcrx'tit user's requirements. Messrs Hchnoro and Van Asch wrote, asking ior compensation to Mr - s - Jones, contractor, for closing hi*- work before the conipk'-ioil of the contract. The Council had little sympathy with the application, but deemed it advisable to havo its solicitor's opinion in the matter. It v,a< resolved tit notify that 10 per cent, will he added i<> rate*, unpaid by Saturday, January ,'iOth next. Tho clerk was instructed to require tin.' removal of fencing placed without permission across Swamp road, and to make some fresh arrangements for the upkeep ol Mi!e>'s ford/over the Ashley. The chairman having notified that lie might- uot stand ior r -v -e!oction to the Council, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr l'hilpoti. to record the Council's deep appreciation of the work of Mr Mackintosh as chairman. Meinl*or> regretted lii.s retirement, and ho]>ed he would reconsider his decision. Mr Mackintosh. in reply. thanked members lor tho pleasant meetings of ihe Council. He wonh.l like to see to their termination the important, works now coming on. and would moot, if possible, members," wishes with regard to his re-election.
