FIRST BATTLE ON ALBERT NYANZA.

LONDON, November 2. In tho first battle ever fought on Lake Victoria Nyanza, the steamer Winifred, with 140 men and a Maxim aboard, planned to attack Kurung Bay. It got within two thousand yarde of the. German fort, which opened firo with nine-pounders and Maxims. Shells struck the Winifred above the water-line, and damaged her funnel. The steamer consequently retired, but returned the same night with another British vessel, and found that tho Germans had fled. The English flag was then planted on tho fort.
