In the evening musical and vocal selections wero given by Mies Be-trico Claridg. and Messrs Trewerne and A Millar. PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. At a mcsting of tho Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held last evening, a letter- waa received from Mr Johnston, veterinary surgeon, carrying on tho Society's animal home, stating that be would relinquish * his lease of the homo at the end of the prasent month. A committoo was appointed to consider the question of furthor carrying on tbo home. COURT STAR OF CANTERBURY. A meeting of Court Star of Canterbury, Ancient Order of Foresters, waa held on Monday, Bro. L. E. West, Chief Banger, being in the chair. Bro. J. Wathew, P.S., and Bro. O. Jacobson, D.C.B, reported on tho business .transacted at tbe last district me«ting, stating that a conference would shortly be held in Christchurch for tho purpose of forming a subsidiary High Court in New Zealand, and that the district would open a I new court in Greendalo during tho present week. The usual remuneration to the delegates attending the district' meeting was granted. LOYAL ADDINGTON LODGE. Tins fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Addington Lodge, No. G5-14, 1.0.0.F.. M.U.. was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Dickens street, on Monday evening, when tnere was a good attendance of merabere, tho N.G., Bro. D. M. Hill, presiding. Threo members were reported on tho eick funds. P.G. Bro. "W. R. Gahagan' and P.G. Bro. S. W. Lester, auditors, presented the half-yearly balance-sheet, and in their report congratulated the Lodgo on the excellent financial position, which showed th© value of the funds as follows:— Sick and funeral fund £2540 10s Id, benevolent fund £42 &» lOd. After the business of the meeting had boon transacted, thc Lodg-s adjourned to continue tho card tournament amongst tho members, and a very pleaaant evening was spent. NEW BRIGHTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Now Jiri-rhton Schot-C Committee was held last Present— Mcasx- C. H. "Winny (chairman), H. Goodland, H. Hawker, C* Lsrae!_cn, A. P. Hopkins, F. Paul, A. "NY. Owlcs, E. Eaatwood. and F. Ward. Correspondenoo was received from Mrs Hanham axid family, acknowledging expressions of sympathy. In reply to tho acting-Director of tbo Technical C<f.lege, it waa decided to say that the com*mitt_o would givo a donation of £1 ls towards providing- prizes for the woodwork and domestic science classes. Tlio headmaster reported that tho roll number was 471 and the average attendance- 432. Tho secretary •was instructed to writ* to tho Board of Edncation asking it to supply more suitable sanitary accommodation. In connexion with _ tbo unauthorised d-estruction of treegrowing on the school grounds, it w_» decided _ t_.at tho secretary write to thoso responsible for the damage*, demanding: rep _r_tkm. SUMNER SEAMEN'S INSTITUTE. Tie first annual meeting of the Sumner branch of the Seamen's Institute was held on Monday afternoon, tho Mayoress (Mrs G. "VV. C. Smithson) pre-sidin**- over a, full attendance-; Mrs —- J. Miller, president of the 1 Lyttelton branch, and Mrs Blunt, president of the Christchurch branch, were also present. Tho annual report, which -was read and 'adopted, stated that tho Sumner branch had experienced a very successful year. Hospital visiting was done for three months by Mrs C. A. E. Ferguson and Mrs J. H. Fountain. Comfort bags had been supplied for the men. The success of tho past year waa largely due to th© help given by Captain M-xciel, Mr Booth, and Mr Miller. Tbo bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of over £5. Nine new members were elected, and arrangement, ■were made for tho coming year. It was decided to give »'concert in January, and alao to make forty comfort bags at Christmas. During tho afternoon a presentation waa made to Mrs J. H. Fountain (tho late secretary), who is leaving the district to take up hez residence in Auckland. Tho proentation took th© form of a handsome writing case. Mrs Fountain suitably responded.
