The Press. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1914. Progress of the War.
Tiro news from both the Western and Eastern fields of war in Europe continues to be satisfactory from tlio Allies' point of vicTT. It ; s officially reported that tho German attacks in the region extending from Nicuport to Arras, where tho British appear to be bearing tho brunt of tho righting, wero much less violent on Tuesday. Littlo has been heard of tho fleet lately, but it is evident from tho telegrams we print this morning that it is still giving the Allies most valuablo support. Tho Belgian Government states that tho situarion on the Yser has improved; tho firo of tho enemy's artillery has slackened, ' being subdued by the gun s of tho fleet] Tho Allies' operations at, Ypres aro reported to bo very satisfactory. It appears that the Gormans havo been driven back to tho north and east of Ypres and between Cambrai and Arras. Tho Germans, finding tho position of their right wing becoming criiteal, attempted to create a diversion by a violent night attack on the right bank of the Aisno, in tho region of Craonne, obviously with the object of piercing tho Allies' centre, but wero repulsed. So far. from tho enemy being ablo to capturo Calais, it looks as if ho will have to iiso his utmost ■ exertions to prevent his lino of communication iv Belgium being cut? Seeing, however, that the Allies aro pushing him back on his left in the Wcevre district, it seems as if his lino of retreat through Luxemburg i s also being seriously threatened. Tho Germans aro no doubt splendid soldiers, and they hav 0 succeeded before in extricating themselves from great difficulties. We consider, however, that tho general situation in tho West has altered very much to tho Allies' advantage during tho last few days, and futuro developments may bo awaited with hop© as well as with interest.
Simultaneously thero is good nows from tho Eastern theatro also. Fighting has recommenced in East Prussia, whero tho Russians have repulsed desperate German attacks. Th 0 Russians aro evidently content to hold back tho German army in this district, whilo their main offensive attacks aro being carried out in Galicia against tho Austrians and in Poland against tho German army. Thero is fighting along the Vistula on an extended front. A German defeat by the Russians, resulting in the capturo of fifty officers and three thousand men, is reported this morning. A largo sweeping movement pivoted on Warsaw is being carried out by the Russians, aiid it is believed at Potrograd that the Germau lino of communications is threatened. As explained moro fuliy elsewhere. General Botha seems to hav 0 got to work with great promptitude and some effect in suppressing the rebellion in South Africa, so that the news all round this morning may bo said to be of an encouraging nature.
