Sarah Turner and Sarah Murphy, two very respectably dressed women of middle age, were jointly charged with the theft, on Tuesday afternoon, of goods to the value of £6 11s 9d, the property of the D.I.C. <. Chief. Detective Bishqip . prosecuted, , and Mr M. Donnelly appeared for the ' two women, who pleaded guilty. Chief Detective Bishop pointed out : that it was only an ■ordinary case of ehop-Ufting. In the pas- raaiu' euch ' cases had been brought beforo the Court, and though heavy penalties had been inflicted in the. hope of putting a stop to these practices, they did not * appear, to have had the desired effect. Mrs Murphy's husband occupied a good ' position in town, and Mrs Turner's husband was an invalid. Ernest Edward Cornish, who pleaded cuiltv to a charge of having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, .was fined 10s. John Thompson, who did not appear, was fined 10s. in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for being found in the Lyttelton Hotel during the currency of a prohibition order. ALLEGED RAPE. John William Green was charged with committing the crime of rape at Darfield on October 9th. On the application of the nohec. he was remanded to appear at Darfield this morning. KAKGIORA.
