LAKE COLERIDGE CURRENT.

PROGRESS OP THE WORK.' THE TREE QUESTION. Tho following report regarding the Lako Coleridge current was presented at last night's meeting of tho City Council: — Street Lighting.—The work of.erecting tho street-lighting reticulation in the central area is well ahead with the exception of. where tho wires cross those of the Telegraph Department. In these cases the wires have to bo carried in piping. The crossing pipes are at present being mado in the electrical department's workshop, and will shortly be ready for testing. A start is being mado with tho carrying-out of the street lighting in the suburbs. Rolleston Avenue.—No poles will be erected on the west side of Rolleston avenue. The engineer will endeavour to carry out the necessary work on the eastern sido after consultation; with tho Telegraph Department. rSub-Stations. —Tho concrete work of the sub-station in Bcaley avenue is now completed, and a start is.being-mado with the erection of one at the corner of Montreal and Victoria streets.

Underground Mains. —It is expected that one" of the bitumen boilers will be complete in a week's time, and as tho bitumen has arrived, a start can then Be made with the construction of tho underground mains. This work will require to bo pushed on without dday during the fine weather. . Painting Poles.—The whole of the white lead purchased is used lip, so that unless arrangements can be made for a further supply at a suitable price the painting of the poles must cease. Cr. Taylor, chairman of tho Com mittee, iv moving the adoption of the report, said that when tho committee decided to erect poles along tho west side- of Rolleston avenue it thought that all possible negotiation with the Telegraph Department was exhausted. Since then, howeveiy the matter had been arranged. That difficulty was only one of many that thu committee had with the Teiegraph Department. It.--ferring to recent criticism, Cr. Taylor buid the people who criticised' .should make certain of their facts fir&t. (Hear, hear). The committee and Council were acting in tho interests of tho citizens generally, and tho citizens could take it that sut-'h. .steps as wcro taken wcro taken after duo consideration. Many citizens seemed to go on tho lino that* everything tl.-e Council did was wrong. That showed a lack of loca! patriotism. It was the duty of'citizens to assume that the Council were right until they were proved to be wrong. .Sori'.ral complaints had been made- regarding different, trees, but all those complaints . wero wrong on the facts. One complaint actually charged the Council with something; that had happened right outside-' the city altogether. Tho Mayor said ho rather enjoyed tho criticism. It gave him something to laugh at- Souio of the critical wi.seacres should be on tho committee: they would then realise tho difficulties involved ; they would also learn that matters were not dealt with lightly and inadequately. The report was adopted.
