Tho British steamer Nerehana, from London via Australia, Auckland, and Napier, was twice fired at from Fort Ballance when coming into "Wellington to-day, under essy steam. She slowed down to enable the Government steamer Janie Seddon to come up and examine her, and .as-the latter vessel remained whero slu> was. Captain Griffiths concluded that ho .examination would bo made, and continued up tho harbour. A shot wa.s then fired across the Nerehatiu's bows, and the engines reversed, but before her way could be checked the fort fired again, and she stopped. It. transpired that the Janie Seddon could not. go up to the big liner because her anchor had fouled.
