DETAILS OF THE AFFAIR
FRENCH DESTROY COAL.
BORDEAUX. October 9. It. is officially stated that the Germans fired 150 shells at Papeete, igniting tho commercial quarters and doing material damage. The sailors from the gunboat and a detachment from the colonial infantry prevented the enemy from landing. NEW YORK, October 9. Passengers by the Moana at San Francisco state that tho I* ranch stripped the gunboat Zelee and mounted her guns ashore. When tho Scharnhorst and Gneisenau appeared tho French fired", but tho shells fell short. Tho Germans soon sank the Zoleo and the Walkure, which had been captured by the Zelee, with a valuable carsro of nitrates, then steamed off. " ' Tho French burned 40,000 tons of coal to prevent its capture.
