HIGH HONOUR FOR TWO NEW ZEALANDERS.

Tho high honour has been earned by two New Zealandcr s of hooding the list of candidates in a military examination open to the Territorial forces in Canada. South Africa, tho Malay States, and Australasia. Tho examination, which was held in March last, was a competiti ."o ono for officers .of the colonial military force*, te secure direct commissions in the British Regular Army. Somo 180 candidates competed, and two New Zealand competitors have passed first and sccondr©-' spectively. These New Zealanders are:— Lieutenant E. H. Taylor of tbo 3rd (Auckland) Regiment, who passed first; - and Lieutenant J, F. P. Hislop, of tho Bth (South Canterbury) Mounted Rifles, who secured second place. Tho total marks secured by these candidates, out of a possible 4500. are: Lieutenant Taylor ... 3307 Lieutenant Hisiop ... 2971 Tho work of Lieutenant Taylor was particularly good in tho two papers on military history and strategy, his marks in this department being 820 out of a possible 1000. Where possible tho successful candidates in tiiis examination aro given tho opportunity of selecting the regiment to which they wish to be appointed. Lieutenant Taylor has been appointed to the York and Lancaster Regiment, now stationed ii; India. He will leave shortly for Bombay on his way to join his new regiment. Lieut. Hi slop has chosen tho first battalion of tho South Lancashire Regiment, tbo "40th Foot" of the Maori war days, which is at present stationed at Quetta. He will in all probability receive his orders shortly. The success of the two New Zealand Territorial ofik-ers redounds to their credit, and is an eloquent tribute to the quality of the military instruction imparted to them under tbo new defence system. Tho examination is an annual affair, and since its establishment Dominion candidates havo figured prominently in the results.
