On Wednesday tho Kaikoura Hockey Club registered another win (2 goals to 1) against the Rovers for the Davidson Cup. Vera Schroder and Sylvia Schtodor .scored for the winners, and Beatrice ilcLeod for tho Hovers. Mr Tooby controlled tho game. ' I At one timo the County Council prohibited the removal of gfavel from the beach fronting the Esplanade, but during recent years moro shingle has been j removed at tho instance of tho local j body than by private individuals. The unwisdom of this has been showu in j encroachments of the Pacific during I heavy seas. On \Vednesday there was another illustration of the lolly of disregarding the prohibition. A little to th<i east of the bathing sheds some of the big r6ller. did not expend themselves until they had raced half-way across tho Esplanade, opposite tb_> residence of Mr Ge6rge Leathwick. A meeting of tho Kaikoura Bivor Boord -IV.I- held ou Wednesday, Messrs H. Maeklo (chairman), A. Bond, G. Garrett, and J. TV. Harris being present . The County Council, in reply to a request for the erection of three or fourchains of crates above the Po-t- ---! man's Bead line, stated that the engineer had been instructed to inspect and report. It was decided that Messrs Boyd and Harris arrange to accompany the engineer on his visit of inspection. Mr Garrett urged that- more willows should be planted, and he was authorised to have them put in, provided he could obtain tho requisite labour. Steps to obtain payment of overdue rates wero directed to be taken. An extension of the rating area by the inclusion of the we_t end of the town was strongly urged, and it was suggested that Mr Short s services should bo obtained to enquire into tho question, and determine what properties should b* included in the rating area. It waa agreed to leave tho matter in abeyance for tlio ore sent. Messrs Boyd and Harris wero deputed to interview Mr K. Howard, and make arrangements with him regarding, overdue rent, and term for his continuance of the lease of the Board reserve occupied by him, with power to reduce the rent for the remainder of the period—six years. Notice of intention to strike a rate of id in tho £ was giveu.
