ST. ALBANS SCHOOL COMMITTEE.'
The monthly meeting of the St. Albans School Committee took, place on 'Aiauday evening. Present: —Messrs A: H. Hobbs (chairman), R. Fletcher, F. Cole, J. A.'Co'vilie, J. McFarlane, W. H. Beanland, and A. D. Hassall, and Mrs Stewart.. _ Correspondence was received from the Board notifying that the school would bo inspected by Mr Brock and Mr Owon
Tho chairman, read a petition received from ten householders, requesting that the school should be closed ou account of sickness prevalent in so many families. He gave an explanation that he had beon in close touch with the Board and the Health Department, which had advised that no good purpose would be achieved by closing. The committee unanimously endorsed the action of., the chairman.
The Children's Open-Air Homes proposals were heartily endorsed* and details left in the hands of the headmaster and chairman. The report of the headmaster showed that the number on the roll was 761', and the average attendance for the month 661. and for the Juno quarter 669 as against 611 last year. Attention was called to tho defective lighting in the temporary building erected by the Board, and it was agreed that application be made for two skylights. Tho report of the delegates to the School Committees' Association .provoked an interesting discussion. Messrs McFarlane and Hassall were appointed as a visiting committee for the ensuing month. An application for an increase of salary from the caretaker was favourably -ntertained, and it was further resolved that gas be.installed in his house. Mr F. Cole (secretary) reported that ho had attended the recent meeting for the election of the Elmwood Committee, and had challenged a statement in gurd to accounts as between the two committees. Mr Cole was assured that he had the sympathy of his fellowmembers in the matter.
