ASHBURTON.

The Star of Ashburfon Loyal Orange Lodge, No. 23, celebrated the anniversary of the Battle/of the Boyne by ,, holding a. dinner followed by a. concert in the Orange Hall on Friday evening, whea fully 350 persons ware present.

The W.JI. Bro. J. F. Hampton presided, and the following; Lodges were represented:—Tiraaru, Binds, Ownedin. and Christehurch. After dinner a lengthy toast list tvas honoured, and short addresses were given by the Itevs. G. Miller and It. J. Liddell. The halftyearly meeting of the Ashr % burton branch of the Hibernian Society H.A.C.8.5., wae held on Monday evening last, when Bro. T. Purcell, 8.F., presided. One new member was initiated. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: —Preeident, Bro. T. Purcell; vice-president, Bro. J. Lennon; treasurer. Rev. Father J. J. O'Donnell; secretary, Bro. F. Bro'phy; warden, Bro. P. Brosnan; guardian, Bro. J. Devlin; sick visitors, Bros. J. Lennon and A 7. Madden; auditors, Bros. J. Hannigan and S. Madden. Pact-presidents Bro. T. N. Brophy and S. Madden were appointed to act on the Judicial Committee. After transacting routine business the meeting closed. The member for Aehbnrton (Mr W. Nosworthy) has received the following, reply to * representations made for a new courthouse at. Ashburton :—"I have looked into the matter, and it appears that the present courthouse is sufficient for all Court purposes at the present time.—A. Ij. Herdman." There wae an unusually large assemblage of the members of the Star of Ashburton Lodge at the local Orange Hall yesterday morning, when, headed by the Temperance band, they marched in procession to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and attended divine service. The preacher was the Rev. G. Miller, who delivered a sermon appropriate to the occasion, taking for bis text, Ecclesiastos, chapter xi., verse 7: "Truly tho light ie sweet and a pleasant thing it is for the eye§ to b*. hold the sun."
