LEVEL CROSSING DANGERS.
NEW SIGNALLING -'DEVICE. SATISFACTORY TESTS. (special to "ren_ press.") WELLINGTON, July 8. In a cfaostion regarding level railway crossings, which was submitted in tho House to-day by Mr A. M. My ore, tho Minister of Bailw-ays was asked to stato whether tho Railway Depart_k_oi_t had not yet snececded in djisoovenng an efficient automatic device for uso at level crossings. Mr Myers said that tho annual toll exacted by these level crossings was appalling, and there should bo no further delay in the installation of efficient automatic dovices. Th© Hon. W. H_ Herries (Ministea of Railways) replied as follows.—-An automatic signalling device for use *fc level crossings bas been designed, and has been undergoing a practical test; at Levin during tho past three months., Satisfactory results having been achiev- \ ed, arrangoment- havo been made to inital the appliances at various busy crossings os opportunity offers. In view, however, of the heavy cost involved and the fact that the machine, have to be mannfactured, it will only" be po___ble to equip a fired nmnber of crossings &eh year, bat the work will be carried on until all the busier crossings are prorated for. .
