A BICYCLE THIEF.
■■' " r-4 CAUGHT IN THE ACT.
,It is not often that a bicyclo thief is caught in the act, but, according to the story told by Senior-Sergeant Mathicson in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, the city furnished such*a case on Tuesday evening last. Wilhelm Knab appeared before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., on a charge that ho stole a bicycle, valued at £7, the property of Harry Leigh.' Tho Senior-Sergeant said that Leigh left his bicycle outside a suburban store. A few minutes later a noise outside warned him that the machine was. being removed. A chase ensued, and the thief was caught. But while tho police were being sont for tho man grow desperate: assaulted his captor, and -escaped. Later, Constable J. P. Ryan arrested the accused, on a. fair description of the thief being furnished. Accused said he had been drinking, and was not responsible for his actions, bnt the Magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £5, in default ono month's imprisonment, said "that, even were the statement true, it was no excuse for stealing a bicycle.
