RUSCUS ACULEATUS.
(Butchers' Broom).
This is a hardy, evergreen leafless shrub, with flattened leaf-like .branches and small green flovers in the. spring. The plant is covered with-bT_iant>col-oured berries in tho autumn and wintor, making it a conspicuous'object in the garden. It may be grown in the open or under the shade of large deciduous, trees. It is decidedly quaint in its growth. No doubt in its'earlier history'it developed leaves, but these probably becamo functioiUoas and' were put off as useless, and their work performed by the flattened stems. It would be worth while to pot a plant of theRuscus and grow' it under glass with a high temperature and moist atmosphere,, and so possibly develop "eaves and thus learn'more of its past histosy.
