LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD.

TO THE EDITOXi OP "THE PBESS.**'

Sir, —Tbe two candidates for election representing tho Canal League have istiaOJ a tiicmar, mailing i-no usual misrepresentations, implying that better shipping facilities would be obtained by having the Canal, but they must know that this is mere claptrap, and an • attempt to throw dust in the eyes of the electors. The Canal advocates >yo never beou able to show that v would be possible to work it to advantage in opposition to the present railway system and the splendid shipping facilities in Lyttelton harbour, which are being constantly added to and improved to meet the ever largely increasing requirements and demands of the great Heot of magnificent steamers visiting Lvttelton from the principal ports of tho world. It will he tho duty, and I have no doubt is the policy, of the Harbour Board to keep on making all improvements necessary to meet the greater draught of vessels which may bo expected within the next decade, the requirements of which the Canal could never hope to provide for, and if the Canal were commenced to-morrow it would* be hopelessly obsolete beforo it was finished, or even*if it were finished now it is not possible to suppose that any sane merchant would have his goods landed or shinrcd via the wilderness of the Heathoote. It is too ridiculous to suppose that in this age of progress wo should revert to the Process of carting goods to or from what would be a mere ditch, when we have a good railway system to. a first-class shipping port. The Cinal League, tho principal movers of which are Messrs Little, Alliso*> and Company, never seem to realise that Lyttelton is. and always wiF be. the port for North Canterbury, and tbo ratepayers should he careful to vote for Messrs Bo<ig and Stony at the election-on Tuesday next, to w"-ot we can rely that our interests will be safeguarded and all necessary measure? «UDiorted for, maintaining tho port of Lvttelton in tho highest state'of-'effi-ciency.—Yours, etc., ' RATEPAYER. June 12th.
