CRIPPS FOUND GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER.
SENTENCE OF IMPRISONMENT FOR LIFE.
(rnx-as assocta-no:-* teu-basi.) TIMARU, Janolo.. The Supreme Court was occupied al! day hearing tho charge against Harry Cripps of having murdered an old man named Adam Stevenson at Geraldine. The evidence for tho prosecution was tho same as that given at tho inquest. The defence was that tho blows woro tstruck under provocation, and also tha* Crirps was an imbecile. Accused swore that Stevenson struck him first. Four doctors were called. Two said they considered that Cripps was an imbecile, aud two described him as a degenerate, but a man who know right from wrong. Other witnesses stated that Cripps was stupid .is a boy and a youth, and that Stevonson was a cantankerous man, and difficult to get on with. After two and a quarter hours* retirement, tho jury found Cripps guilty of manslaughter.
Mr Justice Sim said a man like Crippshould not he -allowed at largo again. Ho sentenced him to imprisonment for life, with hard labour.
