COCKATOO ISLAND DOCKYARD
A SENSATIONAL REPORT
(By Cable.—Prcs* A»VK!j'*f.ion. —CogriighP MELBOURNE, June 5. The Minister of Defence has received a report from Mr King Salter, tho new general manager of tho Naval Dockyard at Cockatoo Island, disclosing sensational facts regarding tho existing state cf affairs. '
Mr Salter states that undwr present circumstances warship-building is very largely futile. Vessels under construction cannot be completed until half their effective life is concluded. At tho yard it takes five years to build a ship instead of two.
Money is wanted wholesale, and tho supply of labour falls short of urgent requirements by several hundred men.
Tho present system of payment, Mr Salter considers, adds thirty per cent, to the cost of' construction, and tho dockyard equipment is so deficient that the vesels could not bo launched if they won? ready.
The report will be considered in Parliament.
