IMPROVEMENTS

It is understood that a forward move will bo made shortly in connexion with the rearrangement of tho Christchureh Poat Offico buildings for the purpose of relieving the congested departments. Of these, the Post Office Savings Bank Department is tho ono that is most in need of greater accommodation in order to roduce the inconvenience to which the public at present flic put. Tho scheme which has ' been decided upon contemplates the pulling down of tue building in Hereford street at pre- I cent used as tue parcels oSce, and tho erection "on the site of a three-story brick .fireproof building.'-On the ground floor it is proposed to house the Jfost Offico Savings Bank, on the second floor the letter delivery department will be accommodated, and oh ..the top floor will.be placed the automatic telephone installation, which wilt replace the present Telophono Exchange. A number of alterations are proposed in the old building, chief amongst them being the removal of the public telegraph office to the portion of tho building until recently occupied by the Customs Department. It is estimated that the new building in Hereford street and tho alterations in the old building will involve an expenditure of over £11,000.
