SILKWORMS AT WORK
EXHIBIT AT PANAMA EXPOSITION.
(ysoh a correspondent.) SAX FRANCISCO, May 12. Much of interest to ladies will be eeen .when the Panama-Pacific InternationaJ Exposition opens on February 20th next. How the silkworm spins its cocoon and the American manufacturer weaves this thread into fabric which is afterwards moulded into gowns for American women, will be fully shown in an exhibit in tho Palace of Manufactures at the Exposition, and tho finished product will be worn on scores of beautiful models in » promenade in the palace. The entire exhibit, will be made ■up of tho various industries in the manufacture of the finished product, but will be combined so that to tho public it will appear as ono exhibit- arranged in sequential order.
First will be shown the worms in their cases actually spinning the cocoons, and then the method of killing them so that they will not break a strand. In the next booth, workei t will catch up the filaments of the cocoon on a fine brush and wind them through an eyelet into reek of continuous thread. These skeins will then be passed along to the next booth in which tbe weavers make the silk fabric, and the cloth will bg shown in its various stages of development. Tho finished product will be given to a department of America's moat famous modistes, who will measure, cut, and fit it upon young women in full sight of tho public. At the end of the exhibit, thero will be a long promenade, the floor of- which will bo covered with expensive carpets and the walls of tapestry with hangings of rare* velvet. Here will promenade scores of models wearing the latest j modish gowns. This will unquestionably be ©no of tho most attractive exhibits at the Exposition.
