COUNTY COUNCILS.
ASHBTJRTON.
The monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held yesterday. Present—Messrs C. J. Harper (chairman), J. Cairns, H. Friedlanaer, H. J. Harrison, W. J. Dickie, W. ■ T.. Lill, J. Studholme, G. Murdoch, and 'J". Morgan. After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Studholme, seconded by" Mr Murdoch, "That the Council adhere to its previous decision wit j regard to the Ashburton traffic bridge, namely, that it be shortened as proposed when necessary." On the motion of Mr Friedlander, seconded *by Mr 'Harrison, it was decided : "That as freezing operations are carried on much longer than in former years, the engineer report as to the advisableness of postponing the annual , "overhaul of the water-races by one month, or longer, so as not to interfere with tho work of freezing at Fair- _* to Mr Stu <ftolmo reported that the Ilantation Committee had recently visited most of the plantations in tho county, and a great improvement was noticed in the condition of the plantations since the Council had appointed a plantation reserve inspector. There was still a good deal of gorse-cJearing to do and other improvements to be made. (Mr Studholme) intended to bring forward at a later date a scheme ,n connexion with future planting. It was only a matter of a short time when the Council would have a most valuable asset in the sale of tint ocr from the plantations. A return was laid on the table showing that the total area planted was 4121 acres 3
roods lo perches. The total area unI planted was -acres 12 perches. ancH the total area of plantations which had been vested in tho Council was 12.380 acres 2 roods 28 perches. Mr Street. Methven, applied for a elaughterinf license. Correspondence was read on the matter, and it was decided that no new license be issued until proper arrangements were made. After discussion, *Mr Studholme was given leave to withdraw his motion, notice of which had been previously given, suggesting important alterations in the conditions of future leases of county reserves. The Mayor (Mr H. Davis) and members of the Borough Council waited on the Council and asked for a contribution towards providing, in Asbb-irton, a rest room for women and children. A petition had been received by *.he Borough Council signed by 625 people, mostly country residents*, asking tK-it such accommodation be provided.
