TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
r MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
Tbe Board of Governorsof the Technical College met last night. Present— Messrs G. Scott (chairmau), J. R. Hayward, J. McCuilough, J. Reynolds, A. -Williams, E. ,H. Andrews, C. H. Opie, S. C. Owen, H. M. Reeves, \V. w. Charters, TV. Hayward, W. Bell, TV. F. Cooper, H. R. Rusbridge, ti. Bullock, J. J. Graham, E. Denham, and TV. C. Large. Before the business was proceeded with, tho following motion, proposed by the chairman, was carried, members standing:—"That this Board place en record its feeling of deep sorrow for those bereaved by the North Island railway and Empress of Ireland disasters."
The chairman, In his report, referred to the comprehensive Education Bill promised by tho Minister of Education, and said that it would bo necessary for the Board to take a keen interest in the new proposals. The Bill would entail substantial and necessary increases in the.salaries of the teachers in secondary and primary schools. It was time that representations were made to the Minister to ensure that tho consideration of increases' «f salaries should includo those of teachers connected with technical day schools. If this were not done, the salaries offered by technical schools would not attract the best teachers. He also stated that there was no provision for scholars who were dobarred from receiving free technical education through not passing Standard VI. with proficiency. Ho put forward a scheme whereby these scholars would get tuition in the occupation for which they were most fitted. He had decided to assist the Dunedin Technical College in their Educational and Industrial Exhibition by forwarding a display of work.
The acting-director reported as under: —"All classes resumed on May 25th, and the number ot new entries up to the present is 84. The City and Guilds of London Technological .Examinations are now being held at .the College, having commenced on May 30th. Owing to tbe starting of three new classes in cookery and one in woodwork, from the local Convent schools this, term, it has been necessary to obtain the services of an assistant instructor-in woodwork for two hours weekly, and Mr Charles Brown, an ex-student of the College, has .been asked to undertake the work. It' has also been necessary to get extra assistance in the cookery department. Miss Truman, assistant in- the Domestic Soiencq Department, is now required to give instruction in cookery at the Durfield District High School on both Thursdays and Fridays, and it has therefore been necessary to make tho following re-arrangements:—Miss It. Anderson will • assist Miss Beck < n Thursday all day, and assist Miss »»ebster on Monday afternoons. Miss Werner will assist Miss Maxwell on Thursday -mornings."
Mr G. Scott (chairman) and Mr U. R.'Rusbridge (Tice-chairman) wero reelected unopposed. The committee remain the same., except that Mr W. F. Cooper replaces Mr J. McCombs on the Finance Committee. Mr W. C. Large was appointed to'the Building Committee.
