CARRIAGE OF DAIRY PRODUCE.
(pRKfIS ASSOCIATION- TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, June 4
A deputation representing the dairy factories of Otago, yesterday waited on Mr Massoy and asked for an alteration in the proposed arrangement with the Union Comnanjr in connexion with American trade, so that butter might be carried free from small ports to tho | port of call of the largo steamers Yiiey urged that the Government should not enter into any contract with, the Uniou Company, in which the \oTth Island received an allowance ot from Id to id per lb on dairy produce over and above that allowed the South Island, and contended that one universal price on an f.o.b. basis should ho made for the whole of New Zealand on the lines that were- subsidised. It was not right that one island should get preference over the other. Mr Massoy said that at a recent conference betweon the coni•iny and his own Department they had done their best to obtain the alteration asked for, but the Company had positively declined to allow it. The only alternative was to ask Parliament to vote a sufficient cum to carry butter free as desired. He was of opinion Parliament would refuse to give Gueh a vote.
