OPEN-AIR HOME FOR CHILDREN FUND.
- MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE.
A' meeting of the 'General- Commit tee of the Open-air ' Home for Children Fund was held in..tho Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, Air J. A. Flesher presiding over a largo'attendance.
The North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid. Board wrote stating that it was prepared to undertake the maintenance of the Home on the usual conditions, namely, that the site and the plans of the .proposed building were approved by the Board. ;The letter was received. ■-.-.■-
The Board. also wrote inviting all members of the General' Committee to attend the oponing of the King George Coronation Memorial Home on Wednesday (this) afternoon. • it was decided to accept the invitation.
Letters were received from the Riccarton, Woolstbn, Rangiora, and Lyttelton Borough. Councils, stating, that arrangements had .been', made lor the homing of public meetings in their respective districts. The __ayor of Riccarton was arranging for the collecting of subscriptions, and the , Alayor oi Woolston was forming a committee of ladies.
The Christchureh Aieat . Company wrote stating that the sum of-£-50 had been voted by the Board of Directors to the fund. A vote of thanks was passed to the Board for"their generous contribution.
Air F. A. Hornibrook wrote stating that tho Christchureh Athletic Ciub had decided to hold a boxing and wrestling carnival on the second ; {Saturday in July, the total proceeds, less the actual expenses, to be contributed to the fund. It was decided to accept the offer with thanks.
A financial statement prepared by the Town Clerk Showed that the siim of £301 16s 6d had been subscribed, and that £7 7s had been expended, leaving a balance of £294 9s Cd." The chairman reported that £15 had since been received, and this, with the Christchurch Meat Company's contribution of £50, mado a total of over £359.
Airs C, T. Aschman and Mr T. H. Davey, ALP., were elected members of the committee.
It was stated that letters were being sent to the wives of the chairmen ot the County Councils and Road Boards in North Canterbury,-asking them to form Collecting Committees in tho country districts, and also that circulars were being sent to teachers and the chairmen of School Committees in regard to collections in the schools.
It was decided to ask those willing to work in suburban districts as collectors to communicate with the secretary.
The Mayor stated that ho had received an offer from the Commercial Travellers' Association to hold a street carnival in Christchureh early in August, by which it was noped to raise £200 for the fund. Tlie .Mayor said ho would grant permission for the carnival to be held.
The offer was accepted with thanks
The Mayor also read a letter from the Julius Knight Amateur Dramatic Club, offering to give a performance in aid of tho fund. Tlie offer was referred to the Entertainments Committee.
